The Masson family of France, ancestor to the Smith family of Covington, LA, was traced to John Masson, born in 1670. This work was assembled by Archie R. Smith III and by Suzanne Murcia Eizenberg. Much of the information was collected by Henry James Masson in April, 1914 from family bibles.

Neither Alspoon nor Alapoon has been identified
in France, but the name appears to be Flemish. It is thought
that John Masson was Huguenot.
