If you read your email locally on sal (e.g. with pine or mail) then you should not have to do anything differently. If you use POP or IMAP then you should change your incoming and outgoing mail server from sal.cs.uiuc.edu to mailserver.cs.uiuc.edu.
All calendar files from sal have been moved to salary.cs.uiuc.edu. If you use Sun's calendar manager you do not have to always login to salary. You can use the 'Show Calendar' option on the 'Browse' menu to select your calendar on salary regardless of which cluster system you are actually logged in to.
If you use xhost for X authentication, you will need to xhost the particular system you are logged in to. 'xhost sal' will no longer work.
References to http://sal.cs.uiuc.edu/ in personal web pages will no longer work. You should change them to either http://www-faculty.cs.uiuc.edu/ or http://www-sal.cs.uiuc.edu/.
The former sal was a Sun SPARCserver 670MP with 4 processors and 128MB of memory. The 670MP was end-of-lifed by Sun several years ago and was not upgradeable past Solaris 2.5.1. We have replaced it with four SPARCstation 20 systems each of which have 128MB of memory. One of the clients is currently handling email for the cluster; all other server functions have been moved to a Sun Enterprise 450 server.
The new client systems are: salad, salary, salmon, salon
